Ecuador
Ecuador is a country highly vulnerable to climate change. In line with the Paris Agreement, Ecuador is committed to reducing 9% of its GHG emissions for the energy, industrial processes, agriculture, and waste sectors; Furthermore, the commitment rises to 20.9%, conditioned to international support and cooperation.
More than 90% of the energy generated in Ecuador in 2022 was renewable based mainly on water resources due to the continuous operation of hydroelectric plants. In addition, the goal of the National Government is to further promote renewable energies.
In industrial processes where electrification is not a viable and economic alternative, green hydrogen offers an opportunity to reduce emissions to further develop these industries in a sustainable way and achieve net zero carbon emissions.
In July 2023, Ecuador launched the national strategy and roadmap for green hydrogen.
The country is part of the Global Clean Hydrogen Programme, funded by GEF. In cooperation with key stakeholders, the Child Project aims to enhance national institutional capacities, enabling policy frameworks, and improving technological readiness as a basis for the successful promotion and uptake of clean hydrogen in Ecuador, with the aim for the country to meet its climate mitigation and industrial sustainable development goals.
The Project seeks to provide assistance to effectively attain the benefits of clean hydrogen production and its application in the transportation and industrial sectors. This will promote new value chains, create new jobs, promote renewable energies, and enable clean hydrogen market conditions which facilitate investments.
